The heart-wrenching scene occurred in the early morning as the mother elephant struggled with a painful and uneven gait, splayed hind limbs, and strained urination—signs that urgent help was needed.

Rescuers responded quickly, deploying a helicopter to transport the mother elephant to a safer area for immobilization and medical treatment.

After a tense 10-minute wait following the administration of a sedative, the elephant was safely immobilized, allowing veterinarians to examine her.

They found serious injuries: deep lacerations within her vulva, severe inflammation, and a partial blockage in her urethral opening, which explained her difficulty urinating.

Medical personnel quickly treated the injuries by cleansing them with water, applying disinfectants, and massaging the urethral opening to relieve the pressure from accumulated urine.

They also administered antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to reduce the risk of infection and further complications.

Despite the care provided, the prognosis for the mother elephant remained uncertain. Hope briefly rekindled after reversing the immobilization and reuniting her with her calf.

However, 24 hours later, the mother elephant succumbed to suspected uremia, likely a result of prolonged urine retention.

Her untimely death has left those involved in the rescue operation grieving and has profoundly impacted the local wildlife community.
