“When men began to multiply on earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God realized that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives those they liked.The Nephilim were on the earth in those days – and there were also after – when the sons of God united with the daughters of men and had children by them. These were the heroes of old, renowned warriors.”

The traditional definition of a nephilim is giant.

Some dictionaries describe the Nephilim as giants who also possessed superhuman strength.

The Greek Septuagint, an ancient translation of the Hebrew Bible, refers to them as giants, which actually means “earth-born.” It is believed by some scholars that the word nephilim comes from the root-word “naphal”, which means to fall.

In many biblical circles this definition has quickly cast the Nephilim in the role of the children of fallen angels.

Over the years a myth has developed around the concept of the Nephilim. It alleges that these giants were the descendants of the “Sons of God” and the “Daughters of Man”. Are the Nephilim the children of an unfavorable relationship?

The connection between the biblical text and this claim, although commonly pointed to as the basis for this belief, is unfounded. The document in which we find the statements supporting this claim actually comes from the apocryphal Book of Jubilees.

“And it came to pass that when the sons of men began to multiply upon the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, the angels of God who saw them in a certain year of this jubilee, that they were beautiful to behold; and they took to themselves wives, those they liked, and they bore them children and they were giants.”

Is the claim that the Nephilim were the descendants of the sons of God and the daughters of men supported by sources outside the Judeo-Christian tradition? In other words, does mythology around the world support this belief? Perhaps not and something in common had given the discoveries of the bones of giants.

Greek mythology tells us that the Titan Cronus castrated his father Uranus in order to gain control of the Greek pantheon.

The jelly giant – In 1912 a team of archaeologists from Beloit College in the USA, led by brothers Chester and Ernest Philips, excavated in the area of Lake Delavan in Wisconsin, USA, where they found 10 skeletons of proportions “of an unknown race of men,” as reported in the New York Times on May 4, 1912.

It is from the blood of the castrated Uranus that fell on earth that the giants, the “earth-born”, were created.

The “Earth-born” were, in comparison to us, giants.

The giants, under the rule of Kronos lived during the golden age, in a time free from pain or care, and everyone lived a happy and joyful life.

It was only after Zeus, the son of Cronus, fought for control of the heavens and the earth, that everything changed.

Zeus in his new position, according to Greek mythology, put the giants to work.

It was only a matter of time before the giants began to ignore the god’s commands.

They no longer bowed to the will of the gods.

Their lack of complete servitude and failure to comply with the demands of the gods incited the “sons of God” into outright rebellion against the heavenly gods.

Heavy losses were taken by both sides, but their revolution was finally suppressed by the gods.

The Smithsonian Institution admits to destroying thousands of giant human skeletons in the early 1900s.

A truce was declared. As part of the indemnities to the giants, it was decided to create a new race to handle the burdens that had been thrown at the giants – man.

Based on these mythological traditions, it seems clear that the earth-born giants, the Nephilim, existed long before the first man inhabited the earth.

So when s read the line

“There were giants on earth in those days – and later too.”

It seems clear, from this perspective, that the authors were not being vague.

Instead, they were only making a statement of fact – that the Nephilim, the earthborn, were on earth at the time.

So who were the descendants of the sons of God and the daughters of men? The Hebrew Bible refers to them as Gibborim.

The inferred meaning of this word is men of great stature, heroes, men who are brave.

The Greek Septuagint identifies them as the Renominati or men of renown.

In Greek mythology the gods have a long history of having relationships with humans. The names of some of these “half-gods,” or half-human persons, whose names have stood the tests of time, include Hercules, Perseus, and Achilles.

In India they are called Hanuman and Garuda, and in Sumeria Gilgamesh and Adapa.

Interestingly, there is a parallel myth to this biblical narrative. It comes from the pages of the Hindu epic Ramayana. The Ramayanas is the epic story of Rama, the seventh avatar of the supreme god Vishnu. Rama lived during the Treta Yuga. It was a time when the world was full of giants.

Around the same time as Rama’s birth, the supreme god Vishnu, knowing what awaited him, ordered that all the gods come down to earth and mate with monkeys and bears.

This request was made in order that, when the time was right, they would provide Rama with an army that he could use to help him defeat the giant demon king Ravana of Lanka.

The offspring of these unions obtained a number of impressive abilities from their divine parents.

In Thailand there is a giant footprint that is revered by Hinduism and is attributed to the demigod Hanuman. It is the petrified mark of a left foot.

The mighty Sugríva was the ruler of the Vanara (ape-men). His father was Surya, his main solar deity.

The demigod Hanuman is described as being able to travel very fast, while Nala is the Vanara (ape-man) who helps Rama build a bridge from mainland India to Lanka.

The Cardiff ‘giant’ – One of the latest discoveries comes from China, where archaeologists found ancient remains that were over 1.9 meters tall. Although in the West the size is not surprising, the current average of Chinese men is 1.65 cm and two centuries ago, specialists calculate that they were between 10 and 16 centimeters shorter.
