Prepare to chuckle if a photoshopped picture makes you laugh, as Matt MacMillan has used his editing skills to create some real gems with his premature son. His foray into the realm of photoshopping babies began when his daughter, Ella, was just a month old. He crafted a series of images depicting the newborn engaged in various sports, yielding hilarious results. Matt wanted to do the same when his son, Ryan, was born premature. As Matt explained to Bored Panda, Ryan arrived nine weeks early, weighing just under 3 pounds. During his six weeks in the NICU, Matt and his wife sought out the silver lining, joking that Ryan wasn’t premature but “advanced.” This jest sparked the idea for a photo series featuring his premature son doing “grown-up” activities, challenging the notion that premature babies are somehow frail. While the photos required some effort, the results are simply delightful and absolutely worth every minute Matt and his wife dedicated to the project.
Matt and Alyssa MacMillan have two beautiful children. At the time of Matt’s positively inspired venture into creative child photography and Photoshop, Ella was only 6 months old and absolutely adorable.
Matt began playing with editing photos of his kids even more once his premature son Ryan turned 6 months old. He was coming up with some pretty funny ideas, like this photo of a cool kid skateboarding.
Baby Ryan was born nine weeks premature. He spent the first six weeks of his little life in the NICU before he was able to go home. What a terrifying and difficult time that must have been for Matt and Alyssa.
During his time in the NICU, Matt and Alyssa joked that the premature baby wasn’t premature but “advanced.” That jest inspired the photos Matt later created, using Ryan as his adorable baby model.
Matt wrote about his experience creating the fun images in a post for Bored Panda. He explained his process in simple terms. Some shots were obviously more difficult to put together than others.
“Each session took around 15-20 minutes. Most of the work is in the setup and editing. First, I had to make props and find outfits for most of the images,” he explained. This image of the card table is just hilarious!
Ryan is growing up so fast already! It’s hard to recognize the happy little guy at 6 months compared to how he looks in Matt’s series. You can bet he’ll love these photos when he’s older!
