Veteran Forward Hits the Buyout Market, Should the Lakers Pursue Him?

The Los Angeles Lakers’ decision to stand pat at the trade deadline meant that they would be more active on the buyout market.

They’ve already landed guard Spencer Dinwiddie, but they could be looking to bring in another new player as well.

One crucial name, who could make a difference, was just bought out by his current team. That would be veteran forward Marcus Morris, who was traded to the San Antonio Spurs at the trade deadline. He agreed to a buyout with San Antonio and now can sign with any contender he wants.

Morris coming to Los Angeles is far from a guarantee, but the Lakers should at least approach him to see if he would be interested.

He is used to playing in Los Angeles after spending time with the Clippers, and he saw very closely how successful a run with the Lakers can be.

His brother, Markieff, signed with the Lakers as a buyout player in 2020 before the NBA shutdown. Once everything lifted, the Lakers went on to win the NBA title, giving Markieff his first-ever championship.

Now if Marcus were to join the Lakers, they may not win the title. But he could provide shooting, toughness and extra depth to the mix. Morris played in 37 games for the Philadelphia 76ers this season, averaging 6.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

He also shot 40% from beyond the three-point line, which is something Los Angeles could desperately use help with. The physicality that Morris plays with could also help the Lakers, especially on the defensive end. He doesn’t allow himself to be bullied by anyone, which could be a nice tone-setter for the locker room.

Morris may want to go to a team in a better position, but the allure of the purple and gold is there.

At the very least, the Lakers front office should make a call, even if nothing comes of it.
