The Green Bay Packers faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles in what was the NFL’s first game in the Southern Hemisphere. While it was a historic night for the league, there was some bad news for Packers fans with Jordan Love injured late in the game.
Love’s status for the next few weeks is now up in the air. Head coach Matt LaFleur also refused to comment on his franchise quarterback. The Packers will now wait for initial scans to gauge how much time Love will miss.
Love only recently signed a $220 million extension marking him among the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks. If his injury is a long-term one, the Packers could potentially face a big headache given they went all-in on contention this year.
Jordan Love injury update: What happened to Packers QB?
With six seconds to go, the Packers elected to put Love right back in the game as they chased a win. In hindsight, that proved to be a terrible decision.
Love suffered a hit from Josh Sweat and Jalen Carter and hit the floor writhing in pain.
Video footage later emerged showing Love’s left knee popping sideways. On social media platform X, injury analyst Deepak Chona suggested it could be an ACL injury. While that has not been confirmed, were Love to suffer said injury, he will likely miss more than a few weeks.
What we know for certain is that Love’s injury is a lower left leg injury. If it’s not an ACL, a mild left high ankle sprain is also a possibility.
Former NFL head team doctor David Chao also suggested it could be an ankle sprain, adding that Jordan Love’s injury doesn’t appear to be a season-ending one.
Green Bay Packers depth chart after Jordan Love’s injury
As things stand, the Packers do not have robust QB depth to boast. Malik Willis is the only other quarterback on the roster. He replaced Love after the franchise quarterback hobbled off injured with six seconds left.
With no other QBs on the depth chart, the Packers will have to turn to a free-agent quarterback. The options aren’t super impressive given we’re already in Week 1 but there are a few interesting names the Packers can target, chief among them Ryan Tannehill.
Tannehill found himself on the outside looking in after Will Levis was christened the starter in Tennessee. Tannehill went 30-13 as the starter for the Titans. He started eight games last year before Levis took over and has remained unsigned this year. In an interview with Kay Adams, Tannehill said that he has been staying in shape just in case an opportunity presents itself.
