At the Municipal Stadium, Greenwood played as his favorite right-forward in the 4-2-3-1 system of new coach Roberto De Zerbi. The English striker played the full 90 minutes, touched the ball 67 times, passed accurately 84%, shot four times and was awarded 8.7 points by Sofascore – the highest score of the match.
In the 16th minute, Greenwood drifted left, received a through ball from Luís Henrique, then shot with his left foot across the corner to open the scoring. After conceding the goal, Toulouse kicked off and passed the ball incorrectly in their own half. The ball went through two Marseille players and was placed by Greenwood with his left foot, completing his double and doubling the gap.
The other goal for the away team was scored from a Charlie Cresswell own goal in the 52nd minute. Toulouse only pulled one back thanks to substitute Shavy Babicka in the 90th minute.
With this result, Marseille leads Ligue 1 with seven points, ahead of Nantes on goal difference. PSG have six points, and will visit Lille today, 1 September.
Greenwood moved to Marseille because he has no future at Old Trafford
In round 1, Greenwood had a hand in five goals, including a brace, helping Marseille win 5-1 at Brest. In round 2, the 22-year-old striker contributed a goal as Marseille drew 2-2 at home to Reims. With yesterday’s brace, Greenwood became the second player to score five goals in his first three Ligue 1 appearances in the last 50 seasons, after Italy striker Mario Balotelli at Nice in 2016.
Last season, Greenwood played for Getafe on loan. At the Spanish club, he also regained some of his form with six assists and 10 goals in 36 matches in all competitions, including eight in La Liga and two in the Copa del Rey. Thanks to that, Greenwood was voted Getafe’s Player of the Year for the 2023-2024 season.
While Greenwood shined, his former club – Man Utd – only scored a total of two goals in the first two rounds of the Premier League. The “Red Devils” beat Fulham 1-0 thanks to Joshua Zirkzee and then lost 1-2 at Brighton with the only goal scored by Amad Diallo. Expected attacking stars such as Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount and Alejandro Garnacho have not been able to score.
