Unexpected delivery! First-time mother jaguar surprises Pennsylvania zoo staff with adorable newborn twins

A Pennsylvania zoo received an unexpected surprise when their beloved jaguar gave birth to twins.

Staff at the Elmwood Park Zoo said, Inka the jaguar, gave birth in the early morning hours of January 24.

‘It is with great joy and excitement that we share with you the news that our jaguars, Inka and Zean, are the proud parents of two newborn cubs,’ the zoo wrote on Facebook.

Inka and her cubs are under constant observation. Zoo staff said the cubs (pictured) ‘look great, are actively nursing for long periods of time, and are very vocal’

The zoo has called the birth ‘unexpected’ but ‘exciting’ and has vowed that their ‘animal care team has done everything in their power to make sure mom and cubs are safe and comfortable’.

Inka and her cubs are under constant observation. Zoo staff said the cubs ‘look great, are actively nursing for long periods of time, and are very vocal’.

According to the zoo, Inka is a very attentive mother, so much that it took nearly a week before the staff was able to separate her from her newborns in order for staff to examine the cubs.

Inka and Zean were directly introduced for the first time on October 12, 2016, and up until that point they were only able to view each other between the fencing that separates their exhibits.

Zoo staff said that the ‘chances for a successful conception were slim for a couple of “first-timers,” which is why the birth came as somewhat of a surprise’.

The babies s are the first jaguars born in 2017 within an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facility, according to the zoo.

Inka and the cubs (pictured) will be off exhibit for the next few months. They will be transferred into a new ‘Trail of the Jaguar’ facility when the animal care staff determines that they are ready for the move. The zoo will announce the genders of the cubs on Friday, February 3

Their birth was recommended and planned by the AZA’s Species Survival Program (SSP).

Jaguars are considered a ‘near threatened’ species due to the continued loss of their natural habitat.

The zoo is currently finishing up construction on a new exhibit that will be home to the jaguars. ‘Trail of the Jaguar,’ is scheduled to open in the spring.

Inka and the cubs will be off exhibit for the next few months. They will be transferred into the new ‘Trail of the Jaguar’ facility when the animal care staff determines that they are ready for the move.
