Kayla Filoon volunteers at ACCT Philly, a Philadelphia-based animal shelter. She has been walking the dogs for a year. Kayla enjoys volunteering and bonding with all the dogs at her shelter, but one stray in particular has a special place in her heart.
Russ is a stray dog who arrived at ACCT Philly in terrible condition. The poor dog was very underweight, had patches of hair missing and was severely abused. Additionally, Russ suffered from kennel cough. As he sat in his kennel, looking at Kayla, the 4-year-old Pit Bull looked terrible.
He decided to go for a walk with the unfortunate looking dog and was surprised to find that Russ was actually quite well behaved. He didn’t react or bark like other dogs and also showed a very affectionate side. Russ also demonstrated that he had a rudimentary understanding of command. Kayla made the decision to adopt him the next day right then and there.
Kayla felt she had to act quickly as the shelter was experiencing space issues due to congestion, putting Russ at risk of dying. So she eagerly filled out the paperwork and took Russ home the next day.
Russ had been living with Kayla for less than two weeks and the pictures showed a well-adjusted Russ. According to the photo taken by Kayla’s aunt, he is loving and affectionate. He and Kayla appear on the couch together. He is so valuable that when it was shared on social media, it quickly went viral.
“One night I was sitting in the chair, doing my homework, and he was trying to find ways to hug me,” Kayla told The Dodo. We had another couch open and her bed on the floor, but she refused to sleep anywhere else. Then she positions herself and I look down and think, ‘Oh my God, look at him.’”
“Honestly, he’s a love bug,” she continued. I will be lying down and he will put his head under my arm or his paw on my chest. He will even sleep on my chest.”
What a cute couple. Kayla hopes the photo of the two of them together motivates others to adopt shelter dogs and give them loving homes.
