My birthday is today, and I’m depressed because I feel alone.

From Neglect to Hope: The Journey of Dobby, Winky, and Albus

POOR DOG

One ordinary day at West Mount Vets in England took a shocking turn when a man walked in carrying a box. Dressed in a hoodie and tracksuit, he set the box down in the reception area and left as quickly as he had arrived. Staff initially assumed he was there seeking help for his pets, but upon peeking into the box, they were heartbroken to find two bald puppies, frightened and in desperate need of medical attention.

A Heartbreaking Discovery

The puppies, later named Dobby and Winky, were in a terrible state. Both were completely hairless, their skin red and irritated. The staff contacted the Leeds, Wakefield, and District branch of the RSPCA, who quickly stepped in to provide care.

“These poor puppies were neglected to the point of being unrecognizable as healthy dogs,” said Sarah Bagley, an inspector with the RSPCA. “One is blue-colored, and the other is cream-colored. They’re both female, around 4 months old, and suffering from severe demodectic mange.”

Demodectic mange, a skin condition caused by mites, had ravaged their little bodies, leaving them hairless and in pain. Their physical condition was only matched by their emotional state—terrified and unsure of the world around them.

A Glimmer of Hope

For probably the first time in their young lives, Dobby and Winky began experiencing kindness and love. Though initially scared and trembling, they slowly started to warm up to their caregivers.

“I’m so happy to say they’re improving every day,” said Gena Cameron, the branch administrator. “They were shaking when they arrived, but now they’re running around, playing with toys, and even barking at people. They’ve truly come out of their shells.”

Their transformation was heartwarming—what began as fear and confusion turned into playfulness and joy.

A Shocking Twist

Just as the staff thought the worst was behind them, exactly one week later, the same man returned to West Mount Vets. Wearing the same hoodie and tracksuit, he approached the receptionist. However, when she stepped away to get a nurse, the man left again—this time abandoning a third bald puppy in the reception area.

The tiny puppy, named Albus, was quickly reunited with his siblings, Dobby and Winky. Despite his ordeal, Albus’s joy upon being reunited with his sisters was palpable.

“It’s unbelievable that this has happened twice,” Bagley remarked. “The mange these puppies have didn’t develop overnight. It’s likely they’ve been suffering for most of their lives. I’m deeply concerned about any other animals this person may have.”

Healing and Recovery

Now, with all three puppies together and in the care of the RSPCA, their journey to recovery has truly begun. Though their fur will take time to grow back completely, they’re already showing signs of improvement.

“Their skin was so red and angry-looking when they arrived, but fur is starting to grow back at the base of their tails,” Cameron shared. “It will be a while before they’re ready for adoption, but things are heading in the right direction.”

Looking to the Future

Dobby, Winky, and Albus are not just survivors—they’re a testament to the power of love and compassion. Everyone at the RSPCA is excited to see them continue to heal, grow, and thrive. One day, these puppies will find the safe and loving forever homes they’ve always deserved.

Their journey reminds us of the importance of speaking up for animals in need and working to ensure no pet is left to suffer in silence. Here’s to a brighter future for Dobby, Winky, and Albus—a future filled with warmth, happiness, and the love of a true family.
