Mark Messier is set to headline the brand new Prime Video stream for Monday Night Hockey. This new venture will bring a weekly stream of one contest to hockey fans who subscribe to Amazon Prime. The subscription service does the same thing with the NFL, as it is the exclusive distributor of Thursday Night Football.
As this is going to be a regular thing moving forward, Prime needs to have its own on-air talent to broadcast. It tabbed Mark Messier and several others to cover games.
Prime Monday Night Hockey will stream all national regular-season Monday night NHL matchups in English for the 2024-25 NHL season in Canada. This will come at no extra cost to those who already subscribe to Prime.
Mark Messier leads new broadcast alongside other talent
Mark Messier, the former Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers star, is not the only person involved in this new broadcast. Prime has pulled out all the stops to get fans excited and invested in the product.
Andi Petrillo will serve as Messier’s co-host. Adnan Virk will work alongside them as a third host. John Forslund, a longtime hockey broadcaster, will work play-by-play.
Blake Bolden, a former hockey player and scout, will join the team as an analyst. Shane Hnidy, Jody Shelley and Thomas Hickey will join him in this role.
Jay Marine, Amazon Prime Video’s global head of sports, said via Front Office Sports:
“If you look at what we’re doing in sports around the world, we’re really targeting the largest, biggest, tier-one sports in every country, where the games are must-watch [events]. Of course, in Canada, there is nothing bigger than hockey and the NHL.”
He said that Prime’s goal is to make Monday Night Hockey “a huge national event”, and that it is going to “invest like crazy to do that.” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman believes that Prime can be the partner the NHL needs:
“I think Amazon will bring the ‘wow’ factor. We’re a big deal in Canada, the biggest. They’re going to make us even bigger, give our fans an opportunity to connect with the game in new ways, and maybe break some traditions, which isn’t a bad thing for Gen Zs and Gen As.”
The partnership will begin during the 2024-25 NHL regular season.
