Recently, diva Mariah Carey’s mother passed away at the age of 87, and her sister Alison Carey also passed away at the age of 63. Both passed away suddenly on the same day, and the cause of death has not been revealed.
Announcing on People, Mariah Carey said: “I am deeply saddened by the loss of my mother over the weekend. And sadly, my sister also passed away suddenly on the same day.”
The 55-year-old singer shared that she spent time with her mother before she passed away: “I feel lucky to have been with my mother in her last week.
I appreciate everyone’s love, support and respect for my privacy during this difficult time.”
Currently, the female singer has not provided any specific information about the cause of her mother and sister’s death.
A tumultuous relationship with his biological mother
Mariah’s mother, Patricia Carrey, married her ex-husband Alfred Roy Carey and gave birth to the singer, her sister Alison and brother Morgan.
Patricia and Alfred married in 1960 and separated in 1972 when Mariah was three years old.
The diva said she had a turbulent childhood in a violent and chaotic family. However, Mariah overcame it with her passion for singing.
She inherited her musical talent from her mother – an opera singer and vocal coach trained at the Juilliard School.
Her relationship with her mother was also full of fluctuations.
Mariah once shared in her memoir about her mother: “Our relationship was a thorny web of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.
A complicated love has always bound my heart to my mother.”
Despite the disagreements, Mariah maintains a close relationship with her mother.
In 2010, they appeared together on ABC’s special Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You and performed a duet of the song “Hallelujah chorus”.
Painful childhood with sister
In contrast to her biological mother, the diva’s relationship with her biological sister is not very close. Mariah has not seen her biological sister, Alison Carey, for many years.
According to multiple sources, Alison has a history of drug addiction, prostitution, and HIV.
Although Mariah did not visit her sister regularly, her representative said that over the decades, the singer still supported hundreds of thousands of dollars to raise Alison’s children and sponsored her sister to go to rehab again and again.
In her 2020 memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” Mariah Carey said she no longer had contact with her sister and brother for “her emotional and physical safety.”
Writing about her tumultuous childhood, Mariah alleged that she was abused by her siblings.
In one chapter, she recounts how her sister tricked her into taking drugs, and even sold her to a pimp: “When I was 12, my sister gave me tranquilizers, gave me a fingernail full of cocaine, gave me third-degree burns, and tried to sell me to a pimp.”
After reading her sister’s memoir, Alison Carey filed a lawsuit against Mariah for defamation and insult, causing her deep emotional trauma.
