Lakers News: Ex-LA Big Man Cut By Current Club, Could A Reunion Be In The Works?

Longtime NBA journeyman center and once-infamous Los Angeles Laker, Mike Muscala, is once again making headlines as he hits the buyout market.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Muscala is in talks to negotiate a buyout of his current contract with the Detroit Pistons, a team destined for the draft lottery.

Interestingly, Muscala has already garnered interest from multiple playoff-contending teams.

For those with a memory for NBA trades, Muscala’s name may evoke memories of one of the Los Angeles Lakers’ less illustrious transactions.

In a move that still raises eyebrows among Lakers faithful, the team, then under the leadership of Magic Johnson, executed what many consider to be their second-dumbest trade with Rob Pelinka in the front office (the dubious honor of the first is open for speculation).

This trade, which occurred during the 2018-19 season’s trade deadline, saw the Lakers acquire Muscala from the Clippers in exchange for Ivica Zubac and Michael Beasley, in what can only be described as a hilariously lopsided deal.

During his brief stint in Tinseltown, Muscala failed to make any meaningful impact, leaving fans and analysts alike scratching their heads.

Not long after, he swiftly departed for the Oklahoma City Thunder via free agency as soon as the opportunity presented itself.

In stark contrast, Zubac, the centerpiece of the trade, has since solidified his role as the starting center for the Clippers, a team currently ranked third in the competitive Western Conference standings, five years after the trade debacle.

Zubac’s continued success is not only a testament to his talent but also a reminder of the Lakers’ regrettable misstep in letting him go for what now appears to be an inadequate return.

Currently signed to a team-friendly three-year, $32.8 million contract, Zubac’s value to the Clippers has only grown over time, further highlighting the folly of the Lakers’ past decision-making.

As Muscala’s name once again enters the NBA spotlight, it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of player transactions and the enduring impact they can have on teams’ fortunes, for better or for worse.
