The elephant that needs to be rescued is a male elephant about 11 years old, weighing about 1.3 tons, with an injury in his right leg, making it difficult to move.
The injured elephant was rescued in 2013
This elephant was once rescued by the Elephant Conservation Center at Yok Don National Park in May 2013. At that time, this elephant had part of its trunk chipped and a wound on its front foot (right leg) due to being caught in a trap. After about a week of treatment, the elephant recovered and was released by the Center into the wild. However, through monitoring after release into the forest, the elephants did not join the herd but lived alone and often moved to the farming area close to the buffer zone of Yok Don National Park in Dak Wil and Ea Po communes (Cu Jut district). , Dak Nong) to find food. Recently, Center staff noticed that an old wound in the elephant’s foot showed signs of recurring, making it difficult for the elephant to walk.
This forest elephant’s current leg wound is recurring.
According to the plan approved by the Provincial People’s Committee, the injured elephant will be anesthetized and taken to the temporary treatment area to carefully examine the wound and have an appropriate treatment regimen. In particular, use machinery to check if there is a foreign object (trap wire) still in the wound in the elephant’s leg. If so, perform surgery to remove it for complete treatment. After being treated for wounds and ensuring health, the elephant will be released back into the natural environment.
