If You Encounter This Insect, Dispose of It Without Delay!

Act Fast: Eliminate the Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) on Sight!

The lanternfly, or Lycorma delicatula, is an invasive insect you must get rid of immediately if spotted. Originally from China, it was first identified in the U.S. in Pennsylvania in 2014. Since then, it has spread across various states, inflicting significant agricultural and ecological damage.

Lanternflies feed on the sap of numerous plants and trees, weakening them and causing sooty mold due to the sticky honeydew they excrete. This mold inhibits photosynthesis, further harming the plants.

Identifying lanternflies is relatively easy. Adults measure about an inch long, showcasing gray wings adorned with black spots and striking red and black underwings. Nymphs begin as black with white spots and transition to red as they mature. They use a needle-like mouthpart to pierce plants and extract sap, draining the plants of their life energy.

If you encounter a lanternfly, the recommended action is to eliminate it. You can squash adults and nymphs directly. Additionally, destroying their egg masses—resembling gray mud smears—is crucial. Scrape these egg masses into a bag with alcohol or hand sanitizer to effectively kill the eggs.

Taking action against lanternflies is essential for protecting our plants and the environment. If you see one, remember the potential damage they can cause and act swiftly to help maintain the health of our ecosystems.
