Huge 5.000-year-old Underground City That Once Housed 20.000 People Discovered in Turkey

The underground city was discovered in the course of the implementation of an urban project supported by Turkey’s Housing Development Administration in Nevsehir, Central Anatolia. While digging up in order to build new buildings, constructors stumbled upon this massive underground metropolis.

Actually, it is not the first time when an underground settlement is discovered in Turkey. The entire region of Capadoccia is known for its many archaeological legacies since it once formed part of the Roman Empire.

Though discovered in 2013, it was not until 2014 that the full size of this settlement became apparent. More than 44 historical objects from the site have been taken under ᴘʀᴇsᴇʀvᴀтιoɴ.

According to estimations, this city must date from more than 5000 years ago and is considered to be the largest underground settlement ever discovered.

While we know very little about these subterranean settlements, experts believe that the city may have sᴇʀvᴇᴅ for storing agricultural products.
