Sophiane Nacer wanted to give this stray dog the best “end of his days” possible, even though he was too sick to care for him. She promised that Hippo, a stray old man with tumors, would only know love after his death.
“Even if it was just for one day,” Sophiane, 19, founder of Kindred Senior Dog Rescue of Cayleb, told TODAY, Hippo was going to have the best last day ever.
After a five-day waiting period, Sophiane adopted Hippo and brought him home from the shelter. The poor dog’s skin hurt when touched. Because Hippo was in so much pain, Sophiane wasn’t sure she would be able to experience much.
When he saw his tail move, all his doubts “disappeared.” There was still hope for the sick dog. Before leaving this world, he STRUGGLED to feel love and happiness.
So Sophiane took Hippo to Starbucks and bought him a Puppuccino, a secret Starbucks menu item that dogs love, which is simply a cup full of delicious whipped cream.
Hippo was still in a good mood the next day, so Sophiane took him to a dog park to let him run around. She loved every second of it! However, he had something to say to Sophiane.
The old dog, who was suffering but hopeful, had something to say to his new best friend… He was ready to go. He was very happy to have the opportunity to spend time with Sophiane, but he was tired and sore, and it was time to say goodbye to her.
After the dog park, Sophiane had a euthanasia specialist ʋet come to her home. The ʋet had prepared a roast chicken with sedatives inside it. He was able to eat his last meal as comfortably as possible with Sophiane next to her before falling into a permanently painless sleep.
While this story is sad in many ways, it also has a positive side. A dying dog, who had only known suffering, was given the opportunity to spend the rest of his life, however brief, feeling loved and wanted.
