Time is running out for Dak Prescott with the Dallas Cowboys. If Jerry Jones doesn’t agree to pay him, then Troy Aikman fears the Cowboys would lose their No. 1 quarterback.
In the past couple of weeks, the narrative surrounding Prescott’s extension took a drastic turn. Ever since Jones decided to negotiate with CeeDee Lamb ahead of Prescott, there have been doubts about whether the Cowboys have enough in the bank to pay the veteran under center.
Cowboys’ legend Troy Aikman weighed in on the situation while appearing on Friday’s edition of the Pat McAfee Show. On the show, Aikman batted in favor of Prescott to become the first $60 million quarterback in the NFL, but he also cautioned Jerry Jones about delaying the extension for too long.
I think he's [Dak Prescott] gonna be the first quarterback to get to $60 million... and the longer this goes, the more I think he will be playing somewhere else.Troy Aikman told host Pat McAfee
Prescott’s contract runs out after the 2024 campaign when he will hit a dead cap of $55 million and be eligible for a $60 million+ deal. From the beginning of the offseason, owner Jerry Jones always claimed they wanted Prescott to continue with the Cowboys beyond the next year. However, the situation has reached a point where it’s becoming increasingly clear that Jones may not spend the money without seeing some results in the post-season.
If it continues to drag on and he plays great and then the Cowboys come in late and say 'Now we wanna pay you,' I don't know where his head will be at that point.Troy Aikman said

Prescott remains interested in playing for the Cowboys for several more years. He understands football is a business, and playing elsewhere is a massive possibility.
Troy Aikman compared Dak Prescott with Patrick Mahomes
Fans often overlook Prescott’s regular season records because, in their view, if a quarterback can’t win in the playoffs, he’s not good enough to be in the top quarterback conversation. However, it’s undeniable that Prescott has the caliber to be among the best.
Aikman told McAfee to forget about the name and look at the underlying numbers of Dak Prescott; he would only find great quarterback stats, placing him side by side with two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes.
When you look at the numbers, if you didn't have the names and you just looked at stats... wins included, you would put Dak Prescott's numbers over the past couple of years along with Patrick Mahomes. But it's what happened in the postseason that's what has separated those two.Troy Aikman said
However, the post-season failures should not be one man’s burden to bear. The Cowboys as a team failed to produce the winning moment in the business end for three decades.
