When Rommel Quemenales was just 11 years old, a documentary was released detailing his life on the streets. Growing up without a father and a mother who paid little attention to her numerous children, Rommel had to fend for himself and find ways to make money. However, he wasn’t alone in his struggles. During this time, he met a homeless puppy who quickly became his closest companion.
Rommel affectionately named his dog Badji after his long-lost brother Adji. He takes Badji everywhere with him and prioritizes the pup’s needs above his own. The bond between the two is incredibly heartwarming and inspiring.
Meet Rommel and Badji, an inseparable pair from Quezon City, Philippines. In 2015, Front Row Publications released a 25-minute video showcasing the boys’ daily life. Rommel opened up about his family’s struggles, revealing that his father left them in 2009 for their nanny. While his mother is still present, she doesn’t provide much support for Rommel, who spends most of his time on the streets. His older sister is around, but she’s busy with work. That’s where Badji comes in – he’s Rommel’s constant companion. Rommel shared that his younger brother Adji went missing when they were younger, and Badji reminds him of him. Despite looking for Adji around town, their father advised them not to worry, and the boy remains missing to this day.
Rommel affectionately referred to Badji as his playmate and even likened him to his own brother. To support himself and Badji, Rommel spends his days politely asking strangers for spare change. He diligently saves up the money he collects to ensure that both he and Badji have enough to eat. The loyal pup is never far behind, following closely behind Rommel wherever he goes. Rommel expressed his gratitude for Badji’s companionship, acknowledging that life without him would be lonely.
Rommel was determined to pursue his education and saved up money to buy school supplies, even though he had only completed second grade at his age. Fortunately, many people came forward to assist Rommel in achieving his goal of finishing school. The local school allowed him to attend the third grade as long as he kept himself clean and brought his own notebooks. Although Rommel was the only student without a uniform, he did not mind, as he believed that education was more important than clothing.
Whenever Rommel goes to school, he leaves Badji with his mom or older sister. Putol and Cosmo are his sister’s two dogs, and all of his younger siblings continue to reside with his mother. Rommel frequently visits both households, where he can cook meals for himself and Badji. However, his mother never requests that he stay at home; instead, she desires the money he earns.
Rommel’s life is far from easy, but he always attempts to make the most of it. The kind-hearted individuals who have aided Rommel and his dog have enabled him to achieve an education, which he considers a significant victory. He wishes to attend school so that he can assist his siblings as well.
Rommel expressed his excitement about returning to school as he believes that completing his studies will enable him to assist his siblings. He also shared his desire to have their own home one day to prevent them from being treated poorly by others. The video concludes with Rommel attending school and facing life’s challenges with a positive attitude, thanks to his companion Badji. However, there has been no recent update on their progress, but it is hoped that they are still supporting each other through difficult times. You can watch the full episode here.
