In the heart of Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau lies the town of Dol Dol, where a tiny miracle named Doldol began her extraordinary journey.
Found alone on a chilly November evening in 2021, Doldol’s story captured hearts as she emerged as the rescue team’s most minor orphan ever cared for.
Despite her petite size, Doldol possessed a larger-than-life personality and an indomitable spirit. Her rescue unfolded with the swift action of the SWT/KWS Mount Kenya Mobile Vet Unit, summoned after a compassionate community member sheltered her from the harsh elements of the night.
Transported by helicopter to safety, Doldol embarked on a journey to the Kaluku Neonate Nursery, where she found herself under the dedicated care of Mishak, a seasoned Keeper renowned for his expertise in nurturing orphaned elephants.
Under Mishak’s watchful eye, Doldol thrived, transforming the serene corner of Kaluku into her domain.
Initially, without orphan companions, Doldol’s days were filled with charming encounters with wildlife, including mongooses, hornbills, and even a Verreaux’s eagle owl named Lugut.
With Mishak as her constant companion, Doldol flourished, gradually embracing her role as the ‘only child.’
As months passed, Doldol’s world expanded with the arrival of a new orphaned elephant. Adjusting to the dynamics of siblinghood, Doldol showcased her resilient spirit, eventually embracing her role as the older sister despite their similar petite stature.
Dubbed affectionately as ‘our little beetle’ in Kaluku, Doldol captivated all with her curious and active demeanor, symbolizing hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
From her precarious beginnings to becoming a beloved member of the SWT family, Doldol’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of compassion and dedication.
