Characteristics of the Hoang Yen bird

1. About shape

The most popular Canary bird in the world today has extremely bright yellow plumage. However, they also have other fur colors such as white, brown stripes, blue, red, purple,…. but these fur colors are still not as popular as yellow.

They look small, agile, and have large but short beaks. The eyes are jet black and stand out on the bright yellow fur. In addition, Hoang Yen has a wide wingspan and 4-toed feet, including 3 toes in front and 1 toe in the back, helping to increase the ability to climb and hold prey. Their tail is light yellow and quite stiff.

2. About personality

The Canary is considered an intelligent, agile bird that can be trained by humans and listen to commands easily. However, they are birds that live in groups and are quite lonely if kept in a cage alone. Therefore, they need other birds to keep them company, to help them not feel stressed. However, you absolutely should not keep two male birds alone together because they will attack each other.

3. About longevity

Canaries have an average lifespan of 5-10 years if they are cared for in the best conditions. However, with Hoang Yen species in the wild, their lifespan can be up to 12-15 years.

4. About reproduction

The breeding season of Canaries usually starts in January and ends before summer. When male and female birds pair up, they will find a place to nest, then mate and lay eggs. Both parents will incubate the eggs together and care for the chicks after hatching.

Normally, every year Hoang Yen can lay 3-4 batches, each batch has 4-5 eggs. Therefore, they can completely develop into a community in just a short time even if you only raise two from the beginning. After hatching, young birds will be quite weak, needing up to 30-40 days of age to fully develop their feathers and then be able to learn to fly. When they are 9-10 months old, they can start reproducing.

How to raise and care for Hoang Yen birds

1. Food suitable for feeding birds

Canaries often love seeds, typically millet seeds, sesame seeds, mustard seeds, and some fresh fruits and vegetables. You should have a balance of foods to provide them with enough minerals and vitamins every day. You can refer to the following menu:

– Vegetables and fruits for birds to eat: Broccoli, bananas, beans, apples, oranges,… feed 3-4 times/week.

– Seeds such as: millet seeds, sesame seeds, mustard seeds,… eat regularly.

– Mineral stones and squid shells are placed in the cage for them to eat gradually to supplement minerals.

– Clean water changed every 2 days.

2. Farming cage

Hoang Yen bird cages do not need to be too big, they just need to be of moderate size, well-ventilated, and equipped with food and water bowls. In addition, the cage should be equipped with branches for the birds to perch or toys in the cage for them.

3. Disease prevention

Canaries are very susceptible to ticks and parasites on their bodies. Treatment needs to take place early to avoid serious complications that can cause your bird to die. However, this disease mainly occurs in the summer, especially in birds living outdoors. Therefore, if your bird is raised indoors and fully cared for, you will not need to worry about this disease.

In addition, Hoang Yen birds usually molt their feathers at least once a year. However, if you do not see their hair growing back after falling out, but instead a patch without hair appears, it means they are sick. Therefore, you need to take them to the doctor early to detect the cause and treat it promptly.

4. Train the Canary to sing well

If Canaries want to be able to start learning music and sing well, they need to be 2 years old or older. Then when they reach the age of learning to sing, you can let them listen to pre-recorded music or from other good singing birds for them to practice along with. Doing this requires perseverance over a long period of time. Gradually your Canary will be able to sing and sing beautifully and loudly.

Some interesting facts about the Canary bird

2. Domesticated Canaries are a separate subspecies

Did you know that the Canaries raised by humans today are the result of many years of cross-breeding? This hybridization process created a separate subspecies with the golden hair color we see today. Before that, they had many different fur colors from white, blue, red, purple,…

3. Meaning of the name Canary

Although it originates from the Canary Islands and is named after the Canary bird. But the word Canary is inspired by the Latin word “canis”, which means “dog”. Very interesting is not it.

4. The Canary was once sent into a coal mine

Around the beginning of the 20th century, the coal mining industry was still a “hot” industry worldwide. Canaries have been sent into coal mines to detect if there is a leak of extremely toxic CO gas. Because this bird can absorb nearly twice as much air as humans, they will sense the danger when CO levels increase and flee. Thanks to that, miners will also realize there is danger and take precautions.

5. The Canary inspires language research

In 1950, the extremely famous short animated film Canary Row was released inspired by this beautiful bird. The gestures and non-verbal communication in the film have helped scientists to further study how people communicate with each other, despite language barriers.

Male Canaries have better songs than females, because during the breeding season, males will have to sing loudly to attract the attention of females. Thanks to that, they can bond with each other and form pairs. Besides, many people who raise ornamental birds often choose male birds to raise instead of female birds.
