President Joko Widodo of Indonesia observed the handover of armored vehicles from Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto to the Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces, the Chief of Police, and all Branch Chiefs of the Armed Forces at the ArmedForces-Police Leadership Meeting held on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Armed Force Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta. The meeting was also attended by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Hadi Tjahjanto, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, Armed Force Commander General Agus Subiyanto, Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak, Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali, Air Force Chief of Staff Marshal Fadjar Prasetyo, CEO of PT Len Industri Bobby Rasyidin, CEO of PT Pindad Abraham Mose, and Production Director of PT Pindad Budhiarto. The Pindad armored vehicles handed over included: 10 units of the Harimau medium tanks, 3 units of the Badak 6×6 fire support vehicles, 10 units of the Pandur infantry fighting vehicles, 12 units of the Anoa armoured personnel carriers, 7 units of the Komodo armored reconnaissance vehicles, and 10 units of the Maung special operations vehicles.
The Harimau (Kaplan MT) is a light tank jointly developed by Turkish manufacturer FNSS and Indonesian manufacturer Pindad. The tank is equipped with a Cockerill CT-CV 105HP (High Pressure) 105 mm rifled gun manufactured by John Cockerill, with the barrel mounting a bore evacuator and thermal jacket. The hull armor is categorized as STANAG 4569 level 4 protection, which means the tank can withstand 14.5×114mm AP rounds at 200 meters with 911 m/s velocity. The underbelly of the tank uses V-hull, able to withstand 10 kg AT mine under the tracks and under the center. Due to modularity, the armor can be augmented to level 5 protection (withstand 25 mm APDS-T at 500 m with 1258 m/s velocity). A modular PULAT active protection system joint-developed by ASELSAN and TUBITAK SAGE can be integrated. The tank itself is called Kaplan MT by Turkey and Harimau by Indonesia, both meaning “Tiger”. The Badak fire-support version (FSV) using an Alvis AC 90 turret with the Cockerill 90LP two-person turret with a 90 mm low-pressure rifled gun. The Badak featured a design with all-welded monocoque steel hull with STANAG 4569 Level 3 protection. The name Badak means rhinoceros in Indonesian.
The Pandur II is an improved modular all-wheel-drive version of the Pandur 6×6 APC wheeled armoured vehicle developed by the Austrian company Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeuge (now General Dynamics European Land Systems). On 24 November 2016 Indonesian government ordered an undisclosed number of Pandur II 8×8 infantry fighting vehicless (including Tatra trucks and M3 Amphibious Rigs) for US$39 million from the Czechoslovak Group which has an agreement with General Dynamics European Land Systems to produce, maintain, and market these vehicles in Asia and Central and Eastern Europe. On 12 April 2019 a contract about the manufacture of another 22 units was signed. These units were supposed to be manufactured locally as the Pindad Cobra 8×8. The Anoa is a 6×6 armoured personnel carrier developed by PT Pindad of Indonesia. The vehicle is named after the Anoa, which is a type of buffalo indigenous to Indonesia. The vehicle is an all steel construction with a reported Level 3 protection of STANAG 4569. It uses a 320hp Renault engine and transmission., which gives a top road speed of 90 km/h and operational range of 600 km.
The Pindad Komodo or Pindad Dragon for export markets design features are made similar to the Renault Sherpa Light Scout family, which is also used by Indonesia. The Komodo’s external designs also resembles the Humvee. While most parts of the Komodo are made locally in Indonesia such as the frame, body and design, Pindad has publicly stated that they used imported components such as Hino for machinery parts and Michelin for the tires. Its diesel engines were imported directly from Renault. The Komodo’s monocoque steel body was made locally by Krakatau Steel. The Komodos can be modified by Pindad on the request of their customers in order to suit their own requirements, depending on the circumstances. Pindad collaborated with MBDA to create the mobile anti-aircraft SAM variant, which are armed with Mistral SAM missiles. Pindad Maung or Pindad Leopard for export markets is an all-terrain, all-wheel drive light vehicle produced by Pindad. Initially designed as a military light utility-type vehicle, civilian versions are also available. The name Maung means “tiger” in Sundanese. The Maung is a light tactical all-wheel drive vehicle that in standard configuration is capable of carrying four personnel.
