HOT NEWS: D’Angelo Russell blamed defensive breakdowns and communication problems for the Lakers’ struggles against the Nets, while also praising Coach Jacque Vaughn

D'Angelo Russell Says Lakers' Miscommunication On Defense Hurt Them Against Nets: 'Jacque Vaughn's A Hell Of A Coach'

The Los Angeles Lakers encountered a significant defensive struggle during their Friday night showdown with the Brooklyn Nets, resulting in a humbling 130-112 loss.

D’Angelo Russell, when asked about the defensive breakdowns, offered high praise for Nets head coach Jacque Vaughn.

Russell noted, “They throw a lineup out there that’s very versatile. If you don’t communicate, they’ll take advantage of it from slips and screens, and obviously, Jacque Vaughn’s a hell of a coach.

He’s drawing up sets and putting them in position to take advantage of any miscommunication or mishaps on our end.”

These comments by Russell may be seen by some as a critique of Lakers head coach Darvin Ham, who has faced criticism throughout the season due to the Lakers falling short of expectations.

In their latest loss, the Lakers allowed the Nets to shoot 52.6% from the field and 40.4% from beyond the arc, pushing their season record to 21-22.

Their defensive struggles were glaring against a team that had lost 14 of its last 17 games before the contest, making it one of the most challenging losses of the season for the Lakers.

As for Russell’s performance, he contributed 20 points, 1 rebound, 7 assists, and 1 steal. Russell has now achieved at least 20 points in three of his last four games.

Coach Darvin Ham has emphasized that excuses are no longer acceptable for the Lakers’ underperformance this season, particularly regarding injuries to key role players.

Despite some injury setbacks, the Lakers only had Cam Reddish and Gabe Vincent unavailable against the Nets, making it difficult to justify such a significant loss.

Such outcomes intensify the pressure on Coach Ham, who has struggled to guide the team to consistent high-level performance.

If they face another defeat against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night, the calls for a coaching change are likely to grow louder.

Amid the Lakers’ disappointing season, they are actively seeking trade opportunities to improve their roster. Players like Zach LaVine and Dejounte Murray have been linked to potential trades, and discussions have included D’Angelo Russell as part of a package for Murray.

While negotiations stalled temporarily, they are expected to resume as the February 8 trade deadline approaches.

At this point, it appears increasingly unlikely that Russell will remain with the Lakers for the entire season.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future with the team, Russell has continued to perform well on the court, demonstrating professionalism and commitment despite the trade rumors.
