In the main event of WrestleMania 33, Roman Reigns defeated The Undertaker to become the second person ever to beat ‘The Phenom’ at WrestleMania after Brock Lesnar. But the star of the show was John Cena. After his mixed tag-team match with Nikki Bella, against The Miz and Maryse, he proposed to his then-girlfriend.
Bella said yes and the two stars got engaged. However, their relationship couldn’t stand the test of time and unfortunately, both the stars went their separate ways. ‘The Prototype’ has found peace and joy after he married to his lovely wife, Shay Shariatzadeh.

John Cena dodges an awkward situation with humor
During an interview with the Los Angeles Times in March 2018, the 16-time World Champion talked about proposing to Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33. He deadpanned and made a funny comment on it: “That’s what I do. Every single week I just ask a different person to marry me.”
This response from Cena came after his Blocker’s movie co-star Geraldine Viswanathan revealed she didn’t know much about Cena’s pro wrestling career and the only time she saw him inside the ropes was when he got on one knee and popped the question.
It surely must have been an awkward situation for the wrestler-turned-actor to address, as tensions spurred in his relations during the time of this interview. Therefore, he decided to tackle the situation with humor. Cena and Bella were a lovely couple and inspired many love birds with their couple goals. However, it didn’t pan out.
Why did Cena and Nikki Bella break up?
The ex-WWE power couple started dating in 2012 and got engaged five years later in 2017. In April 2018, the engagement was called off, leaving many fans wondering what went wrong. For a brief period in the same year, they were together before calling it quits for good in July 2018.
Fans began speculating about many reasons for their breakup, but the Total Divas star put all the questions to an end in 2020. In her book, Incomparable, which she wrote with her twin sister, Brie Bella, she explained why she decided to part ways with her ex-boyfriend.
Nikki revealed that from the beginning, she and Cena had different expectations for their relationship. Despite her desires, she chose to bury them deep down for fear of losing her then-boyfriend. Nikki’s desire to get married and start a family didn’t align with Cena’s intentions.
