Farewell, Smiley: A Triumph of Joy and Resilience, Inspiring Us All

arewell to Smiley: A Tribute to Joy and Resilience

Today, Canada and the world bid a sorrowful goodbye to one of the happiest, most beloved faces to grace our lives. Smiley, the blind golden retriever who spent his 15 years bringing comfort and happiness to thousands as a therapy dog, has crossed the rainbow bridge after a three-month battle with cancer.

Smiley’s owner, Joanne George, took to Instagram with a heavy heart the day before his passing, writing, “It’s the only way to repay all he’s done for us all. We’ll release him tomorrow. He’s had it with it.” It was a difficult farewell, but one filled with gratitude for a dog who had given so much to others.

In his lifetime, Smiley touched countless hearts, consoling the elderly in nursing homes, comforting children with autism, and offering support to patients of all ages in hospitals near his home in Stouffville, Ontario. Smiley’s kindness knew no borders; he earned a devoted following from around the globe, and his Instagram account, with over 200,000 followers, became a beacon of hope and happiness.

George’s son, Shepard, was perhaps Smiley’s closest friend. He lovingly called Smiley his “real-life stuffed animal,” a source of endless comfort and companionship. One of the last photos shared by George after Smiley’s passing showed young Shepard visiting Smiley’s final resting place. “A boy and his dog must part ways eventually,” George wrote, capturing the deep bond between the two. “Shepherd knows this pain he’s feeling is the result of loving another with all your heart. Like myself, he has no regrets. The pain is worth all he gave us.”

Smiley’s cancer diagnosis had been shared months before on social media, a shock to the many people who had come to love this gentle dog. George shared the difficult news on Facebook, explaining, “The dog who I thought would live forever doesn’t have much time left with us. We are obviously shocked and devastated.”

The news of Smiley’s passing struck a chord far and wide, with CBC Toronto even producing a tribute film honoring Smiley’s legacy. Thousands of fans expressed their condolences and gratitude, with one commenter capturing the collective sentiment: “With the passing of Smiley and so many people sending love and giving so much attention to this beautiful boy, it makes me believe that there are still some wonderful, caring people in this world.”

Smiley leaves behind an unforgettable legacy, reminding us of the healing power of unconditional love. Although he’s gone, his spirit lives on through the stories of those he touched and the countless lives he brightened. Smiley may no longer be here to spread his boundless joy, but his memory will continue to inspire kindness, compassion, and resilience.

To honor Smiley’s memory, perhaps we can all strive to be a little more like him—to offer comfort, to give love freely, and to bring a smile to others, even on our own toughest days. As George wrote in her final tribute, “The pain is worth all he gave us.
