Even though first impressions are often based on appearance, two extraordinary dogs have proven that love and resilience transcend physical differences. Picasso, a five-year-old dog with a crooked nose, and Newt, a one-year-old boy who became the superior mother after being bitten by his mother as a puppy, have formed an unbreakable bond. Her story, shared by Liesl Wilhardt, 53, founder and director of Lovable dog Rescue, is a testament to the power of love and the strength found in companionship.
The story of two unique dogs
Picasso’s journey began in 2017, when Liesl took him in after her brother’s repeated death. Picasso, who suffered from a crooked nose, faced tremendous challenges from the start. “It was a wonder that Picasso lived as a newborn,” Liesl said. “He would have had a hard time even nursing from his mother.”
In 2021, Newt joined his family. He had been left with his mother’s severe facial deformities and constant medical problems. Despite his severe facial deformities and constant medical problems, Newt quickly established a bond with Picasso. Their connection was immediate and deep, and they have been inseparable ever since.
A happy life together
Picasso and Newt live on a 55-acre property in Oregon, USA, and are enjoying a happy life full of love and birds. Despite the daily hardships they endure due to their deformities, they have found happiness in each other’s company. Liesl shares her story through videos that show her everyday activities, such as feeding, playing, walking, and picking berries.
“Picasso loves Newt because he loves to play and fight and he’s so cute,” Liesl said. “Our bond grew stronger as Newt grew older.”
Overcoming challenges
Newt has had to deal with several challenges unrelated to his missing upper jaw, but his spirit remains intact. Picasso, on the other hand, has adapted well to his crooked nose. Both dogs have learned to live with their physical limitations and can accomplish virtually anything they desire. They are outgoing and attention-seeking in public, often drawing curious glances and admiration from those who meet them.
“He doesn’t worry, he’s learned to live with his physical limitations and can do pretty much anything he wants to do,” Liesl explained. “I really like Picasso and Newt, they’re wonderfully loving, happy, intelligent and fun dogs.”
