Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani recently added to his already stellar 2024 season by becoming the sole member of the 50-50 club. He surpassed the milestone of 50 homers and 50 stolen bases in a single season, becoming the only player in MLB history to do so.
On September 19, during the Los Angeles Dodgers’ game against the Miami Marlins, Ohtani hit his 49th, 50th, and 51st home runs, and stole his 50th and 51st bases, setting a one-of-a-kind record. The Dodgers’ designated hitter contributed four runs and 10 RBIs in their 20-4 victory over the Marlins.
Everything Shohei Ohtani wore during the game of his historic achievement became significant. Recently, trading card company Topps, which acquired Ohtani’s game-worn pants, announced that pieces of the pants will be included in their cards.
One special card will even feature the logoman patch from the back of Ohtani’s pants, making it a unique collectible.
“We have officially acquired Shohei Ohtani’s game-worn pants from his historic 50/50 performance. The relics are going into trading cards, including this 1 of 1 Logoman Autograph card. Will you be chasing this piece of history?” Topps wrote in an Instagram post.
In the shared image of the card, the Topps Dynasty black card features Shohei Ohtani’s image and signature, along with the logoman patch.
Shohei Ohtani sets Japanese stolen base mark, now eyeing the Triple Crown
In the LA Dodgers’ 11-4 victory against the Colorado Rockies, Shohei Ohtani recorded his 57th stolen base. With this, he has surpassed Ichiro Suzuki’s record of 56 stolen bases, leading all Japanese-born players.
During the game, Ohtani hit his 54th homer, marking 130 RBIs, along with a .309 batting average and a 1.041 OPS. The four-time All-Star is chasing the rare Triple Crown, which means leading the league in home runs, RBIs, and batting average.
Discussing Shohei Ohtani’s impressive performance and the potential milestones he is close to achieving, manager Dave Roberts said (via MLB.com):
“He’s had a tremendous season. When you get to the one-yard line on certain statistics, whether it’s a potential Triple Crown, a 60-60, whatever it might be, stealing 60 bases, you want to try to get there as best you can.”
The Los Angeles Dodgers (96-64), with a .600 winning percentage, are leading the NL West. They are in the middle of a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies and currently lead 8-2 in the second game of the series.
