Will Dak Prescott be a Dallas Cowboy long-term? The eight-year quarterback for the Cowboys is entering this season on the last year of his current deal and is set to become a free agent next off-season.
Prescott and the team had the entire summer to work out a long-term deal, but have failed to do so. The 2024 NFL season starts in two weeks, and it wouldn’t be ideal for Prescott to enter the season without a new contract.
Former NFL general manager Mike Tannebaum spoke about the “unprecedented” situation Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is in. He thinks it’s rare for Jones to be in this position as a successful businessman, and suggests that Prescott has more leverage over a new deal than the Cowboys do

“As Troy Eichmann said, every day that goes by, it’s more likely that he’s a former Cowboy than he is going to be an extended Cowboy, and he has all the leverage here, which is very unusual because Jerry Jones, who’s a Hall of Fame businessman, walks around this planet with all the leverage in 99.9% of time when they didn’t draft a quarterback in this year’s draft guys, they don’t have the leverage Dak Prescott does.
“And what we saw Dak yesterday was somebody that was speaking with leverage, with freedom and totally unencumbered. He’s the one that holds the cards. Not Jerry Jones.”
The Cowboys signed Prescott to a four-year, $160 million contract extension before the start of the 2021 season.

After the Dallas Cowboys reached a four-year extension with star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, all signs were pointing to Dak Prescott for getting a deal done next.
The entire off-season for the Cowboys has been centered around extending Lamb and Prescott. The team extended Lamb before their quarterback, which is an interesting choice.
Prescott was asked earlier this week by the local Dallas media about his contract situation. He said that he is unsure whether he is the next big Dallas star to land a deal. Prescott also added that he doesn’t need to be paid before the start of the season:
“I don’t need it. I think it says a lot if it is or it isn’t. However doesn’t really matter to me, to be honest with you.”
Prescott elaborated on his answer by saying that it will say a lot about how people feel about him whether or not he is extended before the start of the season.
The QB has been named to three Pro Bowls in his career and has led Dallas to the postseason five times.
