Russian LEO satellite destroyer Krasukha EW was seized by Ukraine

KYIV, ($1=29.33 Ukrainian Hryvnias) — The Ukrainian army captured the control unit of the low Earth orbit [LEO] satellite destroyer electronic warfare [EW] system Krasukha 4 of the Russian Federation near the capital Kyiv, learned BulgarianMilitary, citing own sources.

According to photos shared on social media, the control unit of the electronic warfare system Krasukha 4, belonging to the Russian army, was captured by Ukrainian soldiers in the northern part of the city of Makariv, near the capital Kyiv. It is stated that the photo was taken at least a week ago. According to defense experts, the seized system is defined as a control unit of the Russian electronic warfare system 1RL257 Krasukha-4.

Krasukha EW system

The system is actively used to prevent radars and satellites from monitoring airborne early warning aircraft [HIK] to take images from conflict zones. Operating in the 8kHz-18GHz band, Krasukha 4 has the range effectively to disrupt low Earth orbit [LEO] satellites and can cause permanent damage to targeted radio-electronic devices.

The system, which has a lifting angle of 1-60 degrees, can be installed in 20 minutes and be ready for deployment in 20 minutes. Krasukha 4, which has a power consumption of 20kW and is mounted on a tactical wheeled machine BAZ-6910-022 8 × 8, can operate in the temperature range of -50 / +50 degrees. In addition to the war in Ukraine, the system was actively used in Syria.

The system’s targets include low-Earth orbit radar reconnaissance satellites, ground-based search and scanning radars, aircraft-based early warning radars, and radar-guided munitions. The system also can destroy the enemy’s EW systems.

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine

On 21 February 2022, the Russian government claimed that Ukrainian shelling had destroyed an FSB border facility on the Russia Ukraine border, and claimed that it had killed 5 Ukrainian soldiers who tried to cross into Russian territory. Ukraine denied being involved in both incidents and called them a false flag.

On the same day, the Russian government formally recognized the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR as independent states, according to Putin not only in their de-facto controlled areas, but the Ukrainian Oblasts as a whole, and Putin ordered Russian troops, including tanks, to enter the regions.

On 24 February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine by Russian Armed Forces previously concentrated along the border. The invasion followed by targeted airstrikes of military buildings in the country, as well as tanks entering via the Belarus border.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared martial law throughout Ukraine. Air raid sirens were heard throughout Ukraine for most of the day. Ukraine’s ICT infrastructure has already deteriorated as a result of Russian cyber-attacks and bombardments. Several Ukrainian cities or buildings have been occupied, including the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

However, per a US defence official, Russians forces are “meeting more resistance” in advance towards Kyiv “than they expected”; a statement repeated by James Heappey, Britain’s current Minister for the Armed Forces the next day.
