The Pitta-like Ground Roller has striking plumage with bright colors. It typically features a combination of green, blue, and rufous hues. The bird has a distinctive blue band across its chest and a rufous (reddish-brown) head and neck.
It is a medium-sized bird, roughly 25-28 cm in length. As its name suggests, it spends much of its time on the ground, foraging for insects and small invertebrates. It is known for its distinctive, bouncing walk.
This species inhabits the humid evergreen forests of eastern Madagascar, from lowlands to mid-elevation areas.
The Pitta-like Ground Roller is found in the rainforests of eastern Madagascar. It prefers dense undergrowth and forest floor habitats, where it can be somewhat elusive due to its camouflaged coloring and ground-dwelling habits.
The Pitta-like Ground Roller is an excellent example of the unique and diverse avifauna of Madagascar, showcasing the island’s rich biodiversity and the evolutionary adaptations of its bird species.
