The colorful plumage of the Ground Roller, resembling a pitta, is remarkable. It usually has a mix of rufous, blue, and green colors. The bird’s head and throat are rufous, or reddish-brown, and it has a noticeable blue stripe across its breast.

   

The Pitta-like Ground Roller (*Atelornis pittoides*) is a species of bird in the ground roller family Brachypteraciidae, endemic to Madagascar. This species is known for its vibrant plumage, which resembles that of the pittas, and its terrestrial lifestyle

 

The Pitta-like Ground Roller has striking plumage with bright colors. It typically features a combination of green, blue, and rufous hues. The bird has a distinctive blue band across its chest and a rufous (reddish-brown) head and neck.

 

It is a medium-sized bird, roughly 25-28 cm in length. As its name suggests, it spends much of its time on the ground, foraging for insects and small invertebrates. It is known for its distinctive, bouncing walk.

This species inhabits the humid evergreen forests of eastern Madagascar, from lowlands to mid-elevation areas.

The Pitta-like Ground Roller is an excellent example of the unique and diverse avifauna of Madagascar, showcasing the island’s rich biodiversity and the evolutionary adaptations of its bird species.
