Meagan Wight, a 32-year-old legal assistant from Alberta, Canada, is celebrating her miracle baby boy, Dominic, who survived a stroke at birth and defied the neurologist’s warning that he might never wake up. Despite his critical condition, Dominic is now a happy four-month-old, although he is left with bright red spots covering his entire body, which may never disappear.

Meagan was only 32 weeks pregnant in February when she went into preterm labor. After an ultrasound, doctors found a bright spot on her baby’s liver and noted his heart was enlarged. Meagan’s husband, Jarrod, rushed to the hospital to be with her as she underwent an emergency C-section. Dominic was born with blue skin covered in spots.

The next day, doctors informed the couple that Dominic had an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in his liver. This tangle of abnormal arteries and veins was causing his heart to work excessively, leading to high output cardiac failure. Additionally, an AVM in his right temporal lobe had hemorrhaged, causing a stroke. The neurologist warned that Dominic might not survive, even though he was conscious but on significant life support measures.

Despite his critical condition, Meagan and Jarrod cherished every moment with Dominic, taking pictures, christening him, and tucking him into bed. When they agreed to switch off his life support, expecting him to fade away, Dominic miraculously continued to fight and is now a smiling four-month-old baby. The family believes that the spots covering Dominic’s body are unrelated to his stroke and AVM condition.

Meagan recounted the terrifying experience of Dominic’s birth, saying, “My son was delivered by emergency C-section, the first glimpse I had of him was he was blue, and his skin was covered with spots. He wasn’t crying. I thought the worst, but then he let out the weakest cry. I saw him only out of the corner of my eye as they rushed him to the neonatal intensive care unit. I told my husband to stay with him and that I would be fine.”

Determined to see her son, Meagan dragged herself from her bed to a wheelchair despite the spinal tap not having worn off and demanded a nurse take her to Dominic. “When I got there, I could hardly see him under all the wires and tapes. They had no clue what was going on, so every possible machine was hooked up.”

The following morning, Meagan checked out of the hospital against doctors’ orders, still hopeful that Dominic’s issues were just preemie-related. However, their world was soon shattered when they learned about the AVM in his liver, causing high output cardiac failure, severe jaundice, and fluid around his lungs.

Despite the challenging journey, Meagan and her family affectionately call Dominic ‘Spot’ because of his distinctive skin condition. She is also teaching her daughter, Zoe, to embrace her brother’s unique look and celebrate his incredible resilience.

Dominic’s story is a testament to the power of love, hope, and determination, showing that even in the face of dire predictions, miracles can happen.
