For many years, Jatinga – a small village in Assam, India has witnessed birds flocking to “commit suicide” during certain weeks of the year. To this day, this phenomenon still makes scientists try to find a solution.
Jatinga village has scenery like other villages in India. This is where 1,200 people of the Jantia tribe live. They live by taking care of crops in the mountains or raising cattle and poultry. Because this land is remote, very few tourists come here.
However, every August and September, strange phenomena occur in this village. On moonless nights, many birds fly here, rush into the lights of people’s houses and die.
During the two months mentioned above, people in the village picked up many dead birds. In the world, there is no place where such a phenomenon occurs.
Researchers determined that the birds that died in the village were species that lived only 10-15km from the village. Besides, they are also active birds during the day and do not leave the nest at night. Therefore, no one understands why on the nights of August and September, they fly here to die.
When flying near the village, the birds flew at high speed towards the lights in people’s houses and crashed into them, leading to death. Researchers wonder why they don’t escape or find another way? Some scientists believe that it may be because birds become disoriented in foggy weather…
There is a village a few kilometers away from Jatinga, tried to lure with lights but the birds did not fly. In 1957, an Englishman came to the village and wrote about this phenomenon in the book “The Wildlife of India”. This author writes: “This does not happen anywhere else but here. There are certain conditions necessary for the birds to come to Jatinga.”
People in the village believe that these birds were brought down by evil spirits from the sky. However, that is just an opinion without any scientific basis. Up to now, the mystery of the birds that die every year in Jatinga has not been definitively answered.
Meanwhile, local officials hope to use this phenomenon to attract tourists here. A number of resting places have been built to serve tourists coming to Jatinga.
