The three to four meter long creature was discovered on Redhead Beach last week. The site of discovery is about 150km north of Sydney, Australia. The dead whale attracted the attention of many scientists. This is an extremely rare case because whales live in deep water far from shore, the Huffingtonpost reported.
“For a very long time, people didn’t know much about them, and every time we find something dead on the beach, it’s a treasure trove of science,” said Shona Lorigan, vice president . The Australian Organization for Marine Mammal Research and Rescue (ORRCA) told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
ORRCA said volunteers are planning to remove the head of the fish and send it to the Australian Museum in Sydney. The team here will use X-ray scanners as well as DNA testing methods to directly study and confirm the species of this whale.
The cause of the whale’s death is still unknown.
